Hi, I am trying to find out information on how hot I need to get a piece of 1-1/2" thick A387 grade 22 steel plat before I can weld to it. How long do I need to keep it heated and how slowly do I need to let it cool down. I have found some info but it does not specify the thickness they were working on. I will be welding several pieces of mild steel angle in multiple areas to the plate.

Standard preheat for this material is 400F. Wrap with an insulating ceramic fiber type blanket such as Kaowool for slow cooling when finished.

If you need a reference, look at ASME Section VIII, Div 1, Appendix R (Non-mandatory)

The devil is in the details; she also wears prada.

Thank you for the information, it is very helpful.
