    Internal threading problems

It's being done on a manual[engine] lathe. I believe it can be successfully done by turning the headstock in reverse with the toolbit face-up on the far[away] side of the headstock spindle and feeding out from the bottom of the hole. The reason for doing this is as follows; 1.I won't be working...

    Internal threading problems

thanks guys but, as far as i know, unless the lathe has a metric pitch leadscrew the half-nut lever cannot be disengaged once the metric thread has been started. even with a thread dial indicator. i've looked at valenite and carmex threading inserts and holders and it appears as though the...

    Internal threading problems

thanks for the thought but, it's a metric pitch thread so i can't disengage the half-nut lever[i think].

    Internal threading problems

Hello, I have a problem where I have to cut a 48mm internal R.H. thread into a blind hole @ 3 inches deep. I propose to cut the thread in reverse with a left hand boring bar and feed out of the hole. I have enough room to relieve the bore at the bottom of the hole and I think it will be easier...

Machining effects on Y and T of 1144

How will the yield and tensile strength of a 3" round bar of "Stressproof" 1144 [ASTM A311 CL B] be compromised by turning the O.D. to 2"? Thanks in advance. chip

looking for equivalent to Rycut 40AX

thanks for both replies. chemistry is not a real issue in this instance. i've been using 3" 4340 bars. i'm just trying to get similar strength but, increase machinabilty.

looking for equivalent to Rycut 40AX

    anyone have a supplier for chromoly steel bar which is similar to rycut40ax? T @ 103ksi, Y @93, E @ 19%, machinability @ 100. thanks, chip

    certification requirements for D17.1 or 1595 ?

CWIC, thanks for your input [and patience]. regards, chip

    certification requirements for D17.1 or 1595 ?

CWIC, would the engineering authority be considered the aircraft manufacturer and/or their engineering dept? also, if a fillet weld test is required is it something in the order of a tube to plate connection in the 5F position, such as in D1.1? thanks, chip

    certification requirements for D17.1 or 1595 ?

    1. flight hardware [elevator[?] bellcrank] 2.not sure what A, B, C, is. if it's process, it's gtaw 3. tube to plate 4. probably fillet, but not sure yet. haven't seen repair procedure or, A/D. i've just been approached regarding this issue. no paperwork yet. 5. gtaw[guess that's not A, B, C]...

    certification requirements for D17.1 or 1595 ?

i'm just looking for some general procedural information on MIL-STD-1595 [AMS-STD-1595] or, even AWS D17.1 for 4130. such as diameter and wall thickness limitations and other requirements. thanks, chip

Harris just marketed a product they are calling BLOCKADE. It might be what you are looking for or, you can check their website for additional info.

Welding 304L PLate to A500B Tube

evelrod, ever had outgassing and porosity problems when o.f. or gta welding unknown steels? try some 347. the niobium is a great scavenger and prevents carbides from forming. works better than alka-seltzer[haha].

    4130 welding, need advice

400fnSport is probably getting more input on this question than he really wanted but, this has developed into a discussion/debate that i have been involved with for almost 20 years. My "current opinion" is that if ductility of the weld is important then it is ok to undermatch the...

Welding 304L PLate to A500B Tube

i agree with welding1, that 309 is the filler of choice for most "stainless" to carbon steel welds. he also mentions that dilution can cause a problem. my experience has been that if i am to machine this connection after welding, i will use er347. i am not a metallurgist, but i...

    4130 welding, need advice

evelrod, i concur with your concern over the integrity of the weld but it "ain't gonna fly" so i think the risk of a failed weld is not nearly as critical as with an airframe. on the same note, i think it is wise of 400fnSport to consider more forgiving steel alloys.1020 DOM tubing...

    4130 welding, need advice

pwht won't be necessary for wall thickness you would be using for your application. if you gusset, or cluster tubes you might consider it though. gmaw will be tough, but doable with a little practice. i would suggest 80ksi wire[.023 if available] with a 75/25 ArCO2 mix. Historically, oxyfuel was...

    chipbreaker for turning pvc?

thank you all for the great ideas. as it stands now, i've angled my tool so that the ribbon is directed into a container and it seems to work quite well as long as my aim is good and i have no interruptions[of both the mechanical and mental kind]. thanks again, chip.

    cupola repair

are you sure you don't mean ASTM572? that's "below" 588. most grades are weldable with 70ksi electrode. grades 60 and 65 should probably be welded with 8018-C3.
