Per my reference the allowable shear load for a grade 5 bolts is 0.4/sqrt(3)*Fu*Root area. I am designing to an ultimate loading condition (blast loading). I understand the safety factor to be 2.5 (aka 1/0.4). Is this correct, and if so where does the sqrt 3 factor represent. Thanks in advance.
If a horseshoe shim is used between a base plate and slab (assume no grout) is the threaded rod subjected to shear, tension and moment; tension and shear, or something in between (if so is it quantifable). Any help or references would be a great help. Thanks
I have been able, all beit for building contruction, to use TDI washers(google squirt washers). The washer squirt a goo ,for lack of better description, once a pre determined tension has been reached. They are a little procey but allow for visual inspection.
With the 1/3 stress increase being phased out, I began to wonder exactly why it came about. So far the research I have done still has not given a definative answer on how the stress increase came about. Doe anyone know the history of the 1/3 stress increase or a good reference on the topic...
A wind tunnel study was done for a high rise condominum complex in Philadelphia, PA. The wind tunnel study was done by a Candian firm. The Candian Building Code requires the wind tunnel study to include an addtional 2 psf for mechanical effects and 4psf/100m of building height for stack effect...
Is it possible to embed Aluminum in concrete without spalling the concrete? Do all Aluminum alloy react the same? Does anyone know of a good reference? I have not been able to find much on this topic.
The load combination I am refering to is the combination of wind loads from x and y directions (z being the vertical dimension) acting on cladding support structure at the same time. The Cladding support structure is not part of the MWFRS.
The situation I am questioning is a cladding anchor...
How are wind cladding loads combined? For example a corner of a building, how are the wind cladding loads combined, for design the corner support?
To the best of my knowledge the ASCE 7 code does not address cladding load combination, it applies orthoginal loads seperately. I see the corner...
What alloy is typically used in A449 bolts? I would like to specify a smooth rod of equivalent properties. The smooth rod would be 5/8" diameter. Thank you.
Thanks for the quick response. Do you happen to know what alloy is used for SAE J429 grade 5 bolts? I could use a copy of the spec. I am trying to get approval to purchase it, but as usual that seems to have hit a dead end. Thanks
Does SAE J429 specify a material properties and bolt properties or just bolt properties. (i.e. can I purchase a non threaded SAE J429 rod or would it be a ASTM AXXX steel) I seem to get conflicting responses from coworkers. Any help would be appreciated.
I am looking for readily available materials that is available in a minimum 5 foot length, and does not cost too much more that steel. Do you know of any materials that meets these requirements?
I am trying to reinforce an aluminum member with steel to control deflection. I do not have enough room to add enough steel to meet the deflection criteria. Does anyone now of a higher modulus material that is readily available in barstock? I have looked into tungsten wihout much luck. Thanks...
Does anyone know of a good stainless steel extrusion reference? Also I would like to know what the industry standard tolernaces are, or where to find them? Thanks

How was the pipe cut? The pipe was cut with a bandsaw.
Was it de-burred afterwards? I believe it to have been deburred afterwards.
What is the fluid? Water
What is the velocity? 1/4" pipe velocity is approx 392 ft/min.
The fluid is also being cooled from ambient room temperature to 32...
I current have a 1/2" diamter stainless steel pipe that transitions to a 1/4" diameter steel pipe via a compression fitting. When flowing at steady state the connection emits a low frequecy hum and causes gases to come out of solution. the operating pressure is approximately 20 psi. I have not...
Does any one know of a through welding symbol reference? I would like to know what the differnt finish symbols represent. I have been refered to AWS A2.4.
