Does SolidWorks need to be told more RAM is available?

Just ran the benchmark. 67.94 seconds. I'll compare this with the spreadsheet. I didn't specify the workstations that we use-our IT manager did so I'm not sure about system cost, how much more we can spend, or if we're locked into Dell. Our current machines are not very old so I have my doubts.

Does SolidWorks need to be told more RAM is available?

Yes, my CPU is quad-core. What's the best way to overcome this? Is there a CPU we should be using instead? Thanks!

    Huge Assy Questions

One thing to take note of in regards to SpeedPak (mentioned by ShaggyPE): From SolidWorks help: "When you make changes to an assembly, such as adding, deleting, or moving components, the changes are not automatically incorporated into the SpeedPak configuration, even when you rebuild the...

Does SolidWorks need to be told more RAM is available?

Chris: Thanks I'll give it a look. We've implemented SW best practices for years but maybe we're missing something.

Does SolidWorks need to be told more RAM is available?

As I watch task manager, I'm having trouble believing that it's the CPU's. The reading never gets over 25%. Is SolidWorks just a dog when it comes to large assemblies?

Does SolidWorks need to be told more RAM is available?

Anna: What processor would you recommend to effectively work with assemblies of 5000+ components? Thanks!

Does SolidWorks need to be told more RAM is available?

CorBlimeyLimey: Changed the VM to zero and no improvement. I doubt that we can spend the money for new processors so additional patience will be required.

Does SolidWorks need to be told more RAM is available?

Uhhhh...thanks, do work for my SW reseller? :) Next I'll hear that SW 2011 is soooo much faster with assemblies. SW marketing thinks that we're all idiots.

Does SolidWorks need to be told more RAM is available?

Yes, the computer recognizes the 16GB of RAM. The cpu is an Intel Core i7, 860@2.80GHz. My issue with SolidWorks is that it is sloooooowwww when working with an assembly this large. We were trying to increase the speed with the RAM increase. Thanks!

Does SolidWorks need to be told more RAM is available?

Our IT manager just upgraded our workstations from 8GB to 16GB of RAM. Task manager shows only 2.5GB is being used while working with a very large assembly (5000+ components; more RAM is available but not being used. Does Windows or SolidWorks need to be "told" that more RAM is available...

creating a part from an assembly

You might give "SpeedPak" a try for this. On the "configurations" tab right click on the configuration you want to save as a part and select "add SpeedPak". I think it may be better than the "save as" route.

    New to Solidworks

Saving an assembly as a part was suggested a few years ago by our VAR. SW 2009 now has something called "SpeedPak" that might work even better for you. Take a look at the "What's New Highlights" under "help" in SW for details.

    New to Solidworks

4000 parts?!?! This could be a good opportunity for you to develop your patience. As former President Clinton used to say: "I feel your pain." :) The mech eng department that I work in uses 32 bit machines with 4GB and the 3GB switch, decent processors and graphics cards, good SW practices...

Creating a dome... (Im very new to solidworks)

CP3, You could take the solid dome that you have and use the shell command on the features toolbar. Or you could create the dome using the sweep command. Create a sketch on top of your main cylinder for the path and then a new sketch perpendicular on a center plane that makes up the dome top...

    Cross Hatching Large Models

Can any of your parts or sub-assemblies be patterned instead of individually inserted into the parent assembly? My VAR suggested this at one time when I was struggling with assembly speed problems.

    Cross Hatching Large Models

What are the specifics of your workstation? How much memory does your machine have? What is the processor, video card? 32 bit or 64 bit? It definitely sounds like a character builder!
