    Self Esteem

Sorry imok2, I completely misunderstood you. I thought you were looking for advice on mentoring/giving talks to young people about self-esteem. The point was that, instead of talking about all your accomplishments item by item (which would come across as having a big ego), temper it by...

    Self Esteem

imok2, The word "I" was used in your first paragraph 24 times. (I, Latin for Ego.) You want to give young people some advice? Instill in them a sense of duty and service which I suspect is the real reason behind your success. Self-esteem needs to be tempered with modesty. Warning: your idea...

    Contaminant impact on foundations

Frankly, I would be more concerned with vapor intrusion through the foundation. If groundwater sampling has taken place, I suppose you could check the pH for a potentially corrosive environment.

Scares - Taking science out of proportion

It's no secret that people often make decisions based upon their emotions. Politicians, the news media, salespeople, marketing gurus all know this and use it to their advantage. That's why negative campaigning works, blood and gore sells, and men are bombarded with advertisements of scantily...

    Printed user manuals?

I understand the need to reduce costs and save trees, but I'd still prefer a paper copy almost any day. The older I become, the less my eyes are able to look at a computer screen for prolonged periods of time. That's what I get for playing so many video games as a kid ;-).

    Grey water irrigation

Check with your local health department. They may prohibit the practice.

Someone please calm me down, thanksà

Cuttie, sorry to hear. I think a little righteous indignation is in order. Based upon the info you provided, if it were me, I'd tell IT guy that I expected him to set the record straight with the managers he emailed. But that's me and I have seniority. There may be more going on behind the...

    absolution

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Are you more interested in easing your own conscience and trying to make yourself feel better? Instead, don't make life difficult for your boss and don't make the one who recommended you look like a dummy. For your penance, give 110% effort for the...

    meaningless greetings

I've noticed a mildly annoying trend in my office of greeting people in the third person. For instance one day, instead of "How are you?" a co-worker asked me "So how is Mark today?" Unable to come up with a smart a$$ answer in time, I responded brilliantly with "Uh, good." I should call Bob...

Near graduate seeks to distinguish himself from others

Though it sounds obvious, be enthusiastic at job interviews (but don't overdo it either). I've interviewed people who didn't pay attention or came across as not interested. Easy ones to weed out. Act like you're actually intersted in getting the job. Best of luck.

    SPDES permit report

Yes, there are specific requirements. You can find more info about SPDES permits at the following link: http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6054.html When it's time to contact DEC, I suggest speaking with someone in the "Permits" section first since the application will be subject to SEQR.

    Bad Coffee

The town-supplied water has a bitter, metallic taste so the office coffee has been and always will be bad. I dunk cookies to lessen the blow. Better yet donuts (I mean RINGS of POWER!) :-)

    Compost Facility Pavement

What little I know comes from a project where yard waste was composted with sewage sludge using the aerated static pile method. An asphalt base was constructed to contain the leachate, which was piped to a sanitary sewer. Usually, the compost stayed between 50 and 60 degrees (C). A blower would...

    ME cost in 2008

It sticks in my mind that we used to call it the "crook" store. I graduated in '93 and the prices were typically $70-80 a pop for a big engineering textbook. At the end of the semester, they would offer to buy your books back at deeply discounted prices (likely much less than what they were...

Is there cost effective way to remove chlorides from wastewater?

That concentration sounds high. Do you mean 500,000 ug/L? As bimr mentioned in a previous thread, a change to the processing operation in the smokehouse may cost less than an "end of pipe" solution here. Or could they just haul it to the local WWTP?

Thinking of transfering from Structural into Enviro or G-water

There's the old saying,"Bloom where you are planted." Could you incorporate more environmentally friendly concepts into the work you do?

What was your first day at your first job like? I'm really nervous.

To me, the fact that you're nervous is a good sign. It means you care a lot about succeeding and doing a good job. Relax, you'll do fine. My first day and week were okay, but the first year was miserable. My supervisor was of the sink-or-swim mentality, and I was sinking because I had no civil...

    Landfill Gas Extraction

Vinny, Try SWANA. They have landfill gas publications. http://swanastore.stores.yahoo.net/langaspub.html

    Landifill Cover Stability

I've seen portions of old landfills that were greater than 3:1, but they had to be regraded to 3:1 or less per regulation prior to capping. Landfill slopes greater than 3:1 can be a long term maintenance problem.

    The jet engine

Another interesting tidbit, apparently this guy has invented the jet-powered beer cooler. http://www.asciimation.co.nz/beer/index.html Sorry, it has been a slow day at the office.
