    Do you "Stand Out"?

The name change says all. "Personnel" dealt with persons, now we are "Human resources" no different from oil, gas or coal

Feeling Incompetent as a Young Engineer

I've been an engineer for over 30 years and in my specific field (chemical plant maintenance) for over 20. I am still "incompetent" and a "jack of all trades". All I learned in university is to read the books. For everything else I ask around, not just other engineers but also tradespeople and...

Migrating to Canada or USA from Greece (Geological/Mining/Metallurgical Engineer)

HamburgerHelper, Devaluation changes prices only for exports (cheaper) and imports (more expensive). Pay drops relative to other countries, but the cost of local products drops also, so people don't feel it like a pay cut. This stimulates local production and exports.

Migrating to Canada or USA from Greece (Geological/Mining/Metallurgical Engineer)

George, For coming to Canada, you should first look at the immigration process - do you qualify for the skilled immigrant category? Any form of sponsored immigrant? Are you coming with other family members? As bad as it is in Alberta now, it could get better by the time (1-2 years) the it takes...

    Hard hat history

I noticed the chin straps used mostly in the Far East. In the Middle East even the hard hats are not always used. However, chin straps were used in the military - it helps to have a heavy helmet kept in place when you are running and jumping around.

Why do most engineers want to be a manager?

It could be that most engineers are humans, they want to be important or at least look more important than others. I am OK with doing basically the same thing I did 30 years ago, only now I do it much better and I am more cynical about it.

    UT methods applicability

Thank you for your comments! AE will not work here for several reasons. The vessel is in operation and there is a lot of background noise. We did AE on a storage tank and it required changing the level/pressure, not feasible while the vessel is in operation. Most important we do not expect...

    UT inspection applicability

We suspect corrosion in the HAZ on a circular seam of a vessel. We had two kinds of UT inspection - Phased Array and Time of Flight - with quite different results. The inspections were done while the vessel was in operation. We will know the truth soon, when we have a turnaround and enter the...

Stamping drawings in construction (temporary structures) questions

Did you make the drawings? Are you confident that what you stamp is right? Here in Canada it's my responsibility to decide if what I stamp is or is not in my field of competence.

Engineer Moving to Refinery Operator Role

If you can live with the shifts, why take a pay cut and go back from operator to engineer?

    Questions About Engineer and Imigration

Alberta is great when the oil prices are high, not so much right now. If you are looking for hydro power plants in Alberta, you are in the wrong place. Try BC, Ontario, Quebec, NL or New Brunswick, even Manitoba. There they call electricity "hydro", here we don't.

    Old Material Mechanical Properties

I understand that the factor for allowable stress was reduced from 5 to 4 during the war (1942-1946) to save on materials. It went back to 5 until 1950, then became 4 and is now 3.5 (since 1999) - from a FFS-1 course I took recently.

Grooved RTJ rings in Urea service

The standard flanges in HP Urea loops are lens rings per DIN standard. However, our pipefitters prefer to use ANSI RTJ flanges, as they find them easier to assemble. In this case the best practice recommends making saw cuts in the rings, to have only one point of contact to the flange groove and...

Bugatti 100P Rebuilt: The Plane That Could've Turned the Battle of Britain

The article mentions that the plane was intended to participate in the Coupe Deutsch. This was a speed competition that limited engine size. While this limitation led to great developments in aerodynamics, military planes needed larger and more powerful engines to be able to carry heavy loads of...

    B16.5 tolrances

How are the tolerances in B16.5, para 7.2 measured? Where is the center, the end and the contact surface (as in contact surface to contact surface)? Thanks M

    Career in Reliability & Inspection

First thing would be to know what a machine is, what static equipment is and how to know the difference between them. Also how they work, why they break down and how to fix them. Maintenance experience in chemical or petrochemical plant is good. For machine reliability there are RCM courses (see...
