    WILL ENGINEERS REPLACE DOCTORS?

Uppili11, I remember hearing back in my college days that expert systems would be used instead of doctors in the future. However, that has yet to come to fruition. And why is that? The cynic would say that the doctors don't want to share their information which could be placed in an expert...

    powder and pellets extrusion

Gwen, It really depends on the materials of the pellets & powder. If they are compatible with each other, then there shouldn't be too much of a problem extruding both together. What materials are the components? Jeff

    cracked washing machine plastic tub

The type of repair would really depend on the material. What might work for a PVC might not on HDPE. I don't know if the tub would have any indicator on it as to what it might be. You might want to check. Jeff

    Vacuum Lifts

Tegefe, We currently have a vacuum lift on a jib crane. I'm not too sure what the max load is for this unit. But I don't think it'll rotate in all axises. The one we have costs $7500 so it might go up a bit more for the movement you may want. But I really couldn't say how much. Hope this...

    Plastic machines

You can contact one of many suppliers as well as look them up on the internet. You'll want to get with them to tell them what you're wanting to make so they can determine which machine would be best. Here's a few names: Van Dorn Demag www.vandorndemag.com Milacron www.plastics.milacron.com...

    Plastic machines

Well, to answer it in a truly engineer form: it depends. More than likely, those types of products are made by injection mold machines. Of course, that is considering that the items are hollow. If they aren't hollow, then they could be made several different ways. Hope that helps some B-)

cleaning injection mold screws & barrels

I've heard all types of methods for cleaning screws & barrels. One of the most interesting is to run kitty litter (unused, of course) through the machine. The granuals seem If you have brass scrapers, you can get the poly off as the screw is pushed out. Using some WD-40 will usually help get...

    Plant Simulation Software, what works?

Aaron, It really depends on what you need. Does it need to contain 3-D graphics? How much data are you going to analyze? Will you be looking at a medium-to-high volume assemblies? Here are a few links to some other simulation software packages. AutoMod from Autosimulations Division of...

Any case studies on time study at garment industry.

Well, it really depends it what section of the garment industry you're talking about. Are you talking production of garments? The cleaning of garments? The repair of garments? Plus, what aspects do you want to know? Time studies? Ergonomics? Process flow? It really depends on what sector...

What Type of Plastic for bearing?

UHMW is pretty easy to machine and would most likely work in your situation. You should be able to find the material pretty readily available. Places such as Grainger, MSC, etc. will have the thickness that you'll need. Jeff de los Santos

    Nozzle cleaning techniques

One thing you need to remember when putting any piece of equipment or part in an oven is to know to what temperature you can safely heat it to get the plastic off without damaging the part/piece of equipment. If you think cleaning a part is difficult, try explaining why you need to replace a...

    Career/Education Choice

Well, I can tell you this, most engineers do not use Calculus out in the real world. Of course, I'm sure someone will pipe up and say that they do :-) As for the upper ME classes being harder, I think that most degrees have the lower classes that are harder, thus "weeding out" some...

    Lasers Vs. Waterjets

Hi Juanito, I think one thing you need to consider is how much floor space do you have for such a machine. Both are quite capable at cutting. I would think it really depends on the energy consumption of each one. Also, would you be able to maintain this machine with your current maintenance...

    Ultrasonic cleaning, or not.

Hi Rob, If your part is very large, then ultrasonic might not be the best idea. We've looked at utilizing ultrasonic cleaners and we've found that they'll do an excellent job on cleaning a part . . . but it had to be a relatively small part. In order to ultrasonically clean a part, it has to...

Hi Kanokkan, What type of equipment are you wanting to get cost estimations for? Anything in particular? JeffdlS

    PDH/CEU's for Patents

Elandre, Government Institute (http://www.govinst.com) does have some self-study courses that they offer that have CEU's. These deal with safety management, OSHA compliance, ISO 14001, ISO 9001:200 as well as Continual Improvement. While the cost may be the same, you won't have to listen to...

Thinking of doing an LLB (Law degree). Comments?

I remember that my professors said that an engineer would be a likely candidate for getting a law degree. I would think that patent law would be something of interest. Having a law degree would also be handy on your resume and might lead you where you would prefer to work. Best of luck :-)...

Which computer language is useful for industrial engineers?

Well, when I was at the university studying IE, they thought that FORTRAN 77 would be helpful. Unfortunately, they were wrong. As I was close to graduation, I believe they started to teach C++. But I would think that knowing VisualBasic would be quite helpful from all aspects of engineering...

    Lifting small motors

Hi Sweede, Would it be possible for the operators to have a magnetic device which could grab to motor shaft? I have seen magnetic lifts before which could be turned on and off with a switch so I would think it could be possible to have one which could be used horizontally. This would work...

    Lifting small motors

Hi Sweede, Regarding your motor situation, is their a height difference between the motors and the conveyor? If so, what is it? Also, are there any restriction around the pallets of motors? That is to say, can the workers only get around to just one side of the pallet? You might want to...
