Gate valve bypass valves are also used a lot in steam systems - for the same reasons CheMatt mentions above. The bypass valve (usually a globe valve) allows a slow, controlled system warm-up, before opening the main valve.

I agree with Pennpiper (pump-check valve-isolation valve). In a parallel pump arrangement, having an isolation valve between the check valve and THE OTHER pump allows the defective check to be replaced, while the OTHER pump is pumping.

In addition to saplanti's comments, make sure you specify the right pressure class for the gasket. Because of the additional flange thickness needed to accommodate the orifice taps, the orifice flanges may be a different class than the rest of the regular pipe flanges in the same system.
