You may want to try doing a search for companies converting ct and mr scans to CAD data. They generate models from the 2d medical scans into 3d point cloud data. I have seen some of the rapid prototypes they produce and they are very accurate.

Glass is invisible, it makes a big difference what background/environment it is put into. Reflections make glass more realistic. I use HDRI (HDR) backgrpound images for my glass renders.

I use split surface quite often with no problems. I am running 2006SP2 with a Wildcat 990Pro.
Solidworks RX (Start, All Programs, SW2006 , Soldworks Tools) will do screen capture as well. It also identifies system settings.
The best results I have found is to use a STL file. If you are using 3D Max the following settings work well

Use Quick Weld
Leave Auto Smooth On
Uncheck Doulble Remove Faces & Unify Normals
