Greetings all~
I am employed in a specialty MEP field (fire protection), as a mid-level engineer. With the recent down turn in the economy, we are being asked to market more aggressively. I have not had marketing duties every really, only a support role. Making a call, writing an article for a...
For a data center facility, there is a remote hut that has some electrical/fiber equipement. It has its own fire suppression and fire detection system. Am I required to have overvoltage protection on the fire alrm lines when leaving the building to monitor this hut?

Section 908 Emergency Alarm Systems calls for a local alarm and an alarm at a constantly attended location, it also refernces requirements in section 415 for occupancy H. Do these systems need to be monitored by the fire alarm system?
Specifically the fire alarm system needs to be monitored by...
Has anyone used FHC Hydraulic Analysis by Canutesoft? I saw ads for jobs where the software was used. They do give a free 30 day trial, which I intend to download. Has anyone used it? If so what do you think of it?
Thanks in advance.........
Hello all!
I have a question regarding business cards. I've been unemployed for about 6mo. now. I'm not a PE yet, will be next year.(God willing!)I think I'm going to turn on the marketing heat and start offering tech/engineering support services in my field/s. I don't want to go full out and...
I have an Emerson/Alco Valve 240RA solenoid valve on a refrigeration system. It won't close. Its not dirt, I have a new filter dryer and there haven't been any conditions for burn out to create dirt. Its an existing system, I've never had this problem before. I had to replace the valve 2x and...
Hello,
When a B-product is developed, must it have a UL approval or can it be done prior?
Can it be sold as a custom design with Engineers Stamp?
Who will this affect liability?
Thanks

This book is the first non-technical book, that I've enjoyed in a long time. Although it involves a technical theme, it is more about the sociological and personal economic ramifications of the knowledge economy...

I have a career question that I wish to direct for people in the field. I posted it on the career forum (see link above), but I wanted an opinion from you guys in the field.

Hello all,
NFPA 72 states that 5.7.3.3.2 that the maximum transport time for smoke from the most remote port in an air sampling systen should be 120sec. According to section 8.5.3.2.1.4 of NFPA 76 (2005 & 2009), the transport time is 90sec.
Should environments that have a high degree of air...
Hello all;
My company had a recent round of layoffs. Since I started taking revit, and it is new for us, Im being pulled to help with discipline specific revit projects.
I don't mind, especially in this economy. I have two points I'd like to bounce off the forum.
1) How do I avoid being a CAD...
I am a Fire Protection engineer working for an A/E firm.
Our company is pushing (or being pushed)to move to REVIT for a lot of projects.
My question pertains to BIM's (building information management). They seem to be similar to collaborative design tools in "part-making" industries.
How have...
Hello all,
Patent valuation. I have a new product. I have the patents applied for, and I have data backing my claims. Now for the kicker. How do I evaluate the selling, licensing price of my intellectual property?
My guess is that I would use engineering economic fundamentals. I would take a...
Hello all~
I am thinking about expanding my field of expertise and wondering if there is a market/employability for someone to specialize in safety & instrumentation.
I am an engineer currently working in specifying and consulting engineer field, working in fire protection/fire alarm design. I...
I was hoping on clarification on the use of non-power limited supervisory circuits.
1)If the device loop is an SLC circuit with detectors, flow switches, etc. (be it class A or B) then the wiring must be power-limited circuitry.
2)If there is a device like a solenoid, that does not require an...
When conducting code review and design checking as a third party for another engineer who would be the engineer of recod, what is the liabilty? Is a P.E. even required?

Hello all,
I met a fellow engineer on the commute who really had a lot to say about design methods that were performance based.(sounded more like a blend of performance and prescriptive but anyway..) He claimed he could really get the cost down by competitive bidding to meet his specifications...
I'm very confused about class and style in classifying SLC and IDC circuits, and mux circuits. Even the code is a little confusing. I know the basics about what class A and B circuits, but can someone classify what constitutes the different styles? Occasionally, Ill see a style Z or something...
