Embedment/Extension of Piles into the Pile Cap...

I posted this in the Marine/Ocean Engineering forum, but no one was biting... I'm looking into rules/requirements for just how much a pile should extend into its pile cap. The piles are steel H-Piles. AASHTO Bridge Manual says 6 in, but 9 in is desirable for a bent cap (which is more like what...

Pile Cap Design Minimums for Concrete Piers

I'm looking into rules/requirements for just how much a pile should extend into its pile cap. The piles are steel H-Piles. AASHTO Bridge Manual says 6 in, but 9 in is desirable for a bent cap (which is more like what I have). 12 in is required for pile caps. CSRI Handbook (I have the 1984...

"Engineering Mechanics" vs. Structural Engineering as a Major

I've met, over the last couple of months, a few engineers who have advanced degrees in Engineering Mechanics (two X Ph.D., 1 X M.S.). All three are structural engineers by title and many years' experience (all have B.S. in Civil). Every now and then I feel like going back to school... what's so...

Bent Plates and Minimum Bend Radius

I don't understand the "minium bend radius" concept. In the ASD, page 4-174, a 1/2 in A36 plate has a minimum bend radius of 1.5 X thickness. Let's say I'm designing a skewed connection and I need a bent plate, does the minimum bend radius mean I HAVE to bend the plate 1/2 in? Halp!

New York Times' Editorial on Floodwall in NO...

September 22, 2005 Faulty Levees The official explanation for the collapse of some of the flood walls protecting New Orleans has been that Hurricane Katrina simply overwhelmed the system. But reports yesterday in both The Washington Post and The New York Times suggested that Katrina might not...

    PAPER SIZES

I've just been hipped to the knowledge that 11X17 (ANSI C) is the most favored paper size for contract drawings. Who agrees/disagrees? I disagree, I think ISO A1 is the most popular.

    isolation joints in concrete

Where is good guidance on placement of isolation joints say, between a floor slabe and a column pier. I'm looking for detailing guidance, with examples. ACI SP-66 doesn't have it, ACI 318 has some info on isolation joints and plain concrete (not what I'm looking for, I don't think) and ACI SP-2...

    Vehiculat Collision

...which I have confused with impact loading. I'm looking for an "equivalent static load" method to determine a load on a wall due to collision with a car, truck or other motorized land vehicle. There's a good method that FHWA/AASHTO has for *vessel* collisions with bridge piers, but I'm...

    You know what's useless?

Minimizing documentation with SectionWizard and then limiting online tutorials to Java applets that are probably impossible to print! Thanks for nothing, REI!!! http://www.reel.co.uk/Product/wizard/Tutorials.asp

    Steel Lintels and Constructability

This one's been bugging me for a while... Let's say I have a masonry building or a brick building or a msonry brick building, etc. In this instance, it is manadatory to use a steel W-shape for all lintels. OK, no problem. How does the mason get the bricks to stick to the lintel? The flanges...

I've got the US(imp) 4.0 module only. I'm checking out the combined footing module. I would like to validate the program for my boss with a few examples from various textbooks. The problem is, none of the example problems I have seem to match up with the program's reuqired input. OK, most of...
