Applying contact pressure between two parts

Thanks FEA way. That was my first attempt. The problem is that when I apply the pressure penetration load, the contact is lost between the pipes (because the pressure penetration separates them apart). Is there any way to enforce the contact to be maintained?

Applying contact pressure between two parts

Hi, Assume there is a small pipe and a large pipe. The small pipe is concentrically inside the large pipe but they are not in contact (i.e. gap between the outside of the small pipe and inside of the large pipe). The analysis goes through multiple steps causing each of these pipes to deform...

Applying pressures from another software to Abaqus (pressures varying with time and location)

I was expecting this, so thank you very much FEA way for confirming this. As always, you are very helpful.

Applying pressures from another software to Abaqus (pressures varying with time and location)

Hi, We have been given a large dataset which includes the following data from an analysis done in another software: - (x,y,z) of a large number of points in space (~1000s) - For each point, an amplitude (with quite a small increment size) which is the time history of the applied pressure at...

    Bending-Only Shell Elements in Abaqus/Explicit

I was advised that this was a bug in the software which was resolved in Abaqus 2023 FD02. Updating the software will resolve it.

    Bending-Only Shell Elements in Abaqus/Explicit

...using them in explicit analyses results in odd/excessive displacements. I've attached a figure showing the comparison of the results and also the *.inp file for the explicit run. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance...

    Low Friction Force in Abaqus/Explicit

Hi Dave, this was done previously and all will yield the same results; i.e. if no extra effort is put in to resolve the issue, explicit will by default result in a much lower friction resistance than implicit (in this particular model I mean).

    Low Friction Force in Abaqus/Explicit

Thanks Dave and I think you're partly right. I also thought of this behaviour; so, I did two tests: 1. Applied the displacement more slowly 2. Applied the displacement uniformly to all the top blocks at the same time In both case, the force was still notably lower than the implicit analysis...

    Low Friction Force in Abaqus/Explicit

Hi Dave, no, they are elastic with a reasonable stiffness.

    Low Friction Force in Abaqus/Explicit

Thanks again FEA way for all your help. Very much appreciated.

    Low Friction Force in Abaqus/Explicit

Sorry FEA way, but my understanding is that CDSTRESS cannot be output in Explicit. Am I missing something here? Thanks.

    Low Friction Force in Abaqus/Explicit

Thank you FEA way. I'm still having problems containing ALLPW - It is not clear what causes high ALLPW in some models... Two questions from you: 1. You mentioned viscous forces could be output. I wonder could you somehow show interface damping forces as well? I'm trying to isolate the...

    Low Friction Force in Abaqus/Explicit

Thanks FEA way. After quite a few runs with different settings, I've started to better understand how the model behaves. As you correctly pointed out, the energy balance helps a lot in determining whether the results are reliable or not. In doing so I've noticed two issues which I'd like to...

    Low Friction Force in Abaqus/Explicit

Hi FEA way and thanks for your reply. Yes, I've been monitoring the energy balance and have noticed quite high ALLVD. I tried to reduce the Bulk Viscosity - by doing so ALLVD disappeared, however, the results got even worse. What I could see from the model is that, in the explicit analysis...

    Low Friction Force in Abaqus/Explicit

Thanks IceBreakerSours for your reply. Please note that this is a simple model setup to check whether the Coulomb friction model in Abaqus provides reasonable results. The exact same behaviour is observed even with a Mu=0.3. We're not attempting to capture any particular experiments with this...

    Low Friction Force in Abaqus/Explicit

...we’re getting some unreasonable results. We’ve pinned down the problem to a strange issue with the explicit solver. I’ve made a small model (*.inp files attached; figure shown below) which clearly shows the issue. The model consists of a series of blocks which all have contact (coef...

ETABS - Crack Widths in Slabs

Hi, I've been recently exploring ETABS slab design features (only available in the Ultimate edition). Both Slab Design (for strength checks), and Cracked Floor Analysis (for service checks including cracked and long-term deflections) are rather good in my opinion if you know what you're doing...

Explanation for Spine model - CSI Bridge

Hi all! I have a simple question. Could anybody explain what exactly is a spine model in programs like CSI Bridge?? I know that these elements, model the whole superstructure as a single frame element; But how does it calculate mechanical properties of the section - For example torsional...

SAP2000 API using MATLAB - A Simple Question

Hey Kazi003 First of all there is a problem with SAP2000 v15 API so I don't suggest using it at all. If u use SAP2000 v14 I think a simple hint would solve your problem. Just try different methods of defining a "string" variable. for example try ColumnNames={''} or char(ColumnNames) and ... for...
