I was the Chair of the committee that wrote the Guide and just came across this post. (I don't get on here very much). The intent of the ELF was a simple load check since most of our substation structures are rarely controlled by seismic. We had over 30 engineers that did the revision from the...
GTSTRUDL is maintained by a bunch of PhD structural engineers and when they implement something like ASCE 7, they go into the utmost trivia. You can be sure they used every equation in ASCE 7 for complete coverage.
Like someone else said, use a shape factor of 2 on all members and do some spot...
I use GTSTRUDL which has a ASCE 7 wind loading module that would handle this open frame. There may be other programs that do something like this. IIRC, they have a free demo version. If you know some other FEA program, the learning curve may not be too bad. I've used GTS for 40 years.
There will be a Zoom meeting in Jan 2024 to go over the changes between the 1st edition and the 2nd edition. The cost is around $99.

For those that are following the publication of the 2nd edition of ASCE 113, the peer review was completed and all chapters were turned into ASCE. They made some grammar changes and looked over the references and turned it back to our committee to review. Our revisions were...
An update for those that are following ASCE 113. We finished Peer review comments and solicited comments from the entire committee (about 31 engineers) which were due last Friday. The next step is to send all the new Chapters in DOCX format to ASCE to do their typesetting in whatever software...
We are nearing the end (hopefully) and are reviewing the 800+ Peer Review comments. I missed the ETS conference (first time in many years) due to budget constraints on travel. Tying up loose ends with pictures being changed and checking numbers in the examples. The change in the Kz equation in...
I don't recall ASCE 48 having a minimum thickness for poles and you might check EIA 222 to see if their poles say something, but we normally do not see any thickness less than 3/16 and it could be the galvanizing process could cause warping.

I do the structural review of the customer owned dead end tower and the metering transformer stand for my utility in Texas. IIRC, in Texas the utility is required to provide the connection line and owns the towers, but we may get reimbursed for the cost of the tower line ( I don't get involved...
ASCE 48 covers tapered poles and IIRC, round is included as well as the typical 8, 12, and 16 sided poles. The PLS-CADD module PLS-POLE breaks the length into stepwise members and calculates the properties of each. Typical street light poles have very small vertical loads and a lot of horizontal...

I guess I'm not familiar with the term "total bracing capacity". In T-Line towers, each of the diagonal bracing's capacities are given in ASCE 10 for tension, compression, bolt shear, and bolt bearing. The actual load is compared to the limiting capacity. Let's assume the diagonals...
ASCE 10 has some examples for single angle bracing like the picture. If one diagonal is in tension and the other in compression, the tension angle provides sufficient out of plane bracing to consider the intersection point as a weak axis brace for the compression diagonal if the tension load is...
If both diagonals are in compression, you would neglect the point "O" bracing since both diagonals can buckle between the bolted ends at A, B, C, D and the unbraced for the Lz is the entire length. If both diagonals are in tension, there is no compression and UBL does not matter. In the case...
I don't get by here very often, but the document is in Peer Review for about a month now. I think they will be back to us in Jan 22 then the real work begins to address comments. It should go to publication at ASCE in 2022 and we would review the document after it is typeset. I found some...
IIRC, there is a Batch Plot function in ACAD. You do have to set your plot style to use B&W and I think you can plot extents, but it has been a long time since I used it.

I've used GTStrudl for over 30 years. It was developed by Georgia Tech and bought by Hexagon a few years back. If you design Nuclear plants, it is one of the few certified by the NRC. General use steel design with concrete available. ASCE 7 wind load generation. They tell me it is close to...
The bane of the structural engineer is every kid that ever built a tree house (do they still do that?). Sure, you can come up with anecdotal evidence that this or that structure has been around for 30 years so if we add double the wind load and triple the weight, it should be fine.
You can...
We are getting closer but have not sent it to peer review yet. All chapters are mostly done with some grammar checking to finalize. The big hurtle will be the examples Appendix which has been worked on but needs to be put into DOCX format from Mathcad. The ASCE publishers want all equations in...
I get eMails from Cadalyst and see that ACAD expert Lynn Allen is very pro Draftsight from Dassault and she says it reads and writes DWG files. She is very impressed with it.
My company has had ACAD for years and we have a few occasional users that pick it up once every few months. We used to...
I get your point on the NESC inside the fence. The new 113 was very careful not to use the term "building" when describing that function and started using Control Enclosure to describe the spot in the yard where the control cables are located. We did not want to have a local building official...
