Hi, is anyone familiar with AISC's Detailing for Steel Construction publication and knows how relevant it still is today? This is the third edition and was published in 2009. There is a ton of useful information that contextualizes typical steel details, but I am wondering if the industry has changed much since this printing.

I feel that the document is still highly relevant. On many projects, the end product of steel detailing has not changed. More importantly, the embodied wisdom regarding tolerances, fit up clearances, erection concerns, and clear and efficient presentation is probably more important than ever.

Yeah, you can probably skip the chapters on entry level statics and stress analysis

There are, of course, other ways to come by this same information. And, depending on your experience, you may already know it all. The book is meant to se an initiation of sorts.

Well, you are not the target audience for that afterall. As an EOR, you're just an overqualified tourist of sorts.

Hi! Yes, the AISC's Detailing for Steel Construction (3rd edition, 2009) is still a valuable resource, especially for foundational knowledge and standard detailing practices. While some tools, technologies, and codes have evolved since then—like the increased use of BIM and updates to the AISC Manual—the core concepts, detailing standards, and best practices in that edition remain highly relevant. Just be sure to cross-reference with the latest AISC Specification and Manual (currently 15th Edition) for any code changes or updated connection design practices.
