    Austempered Ductile Iron

Thanks MagBen, Superpicral etch also shows massive carbides for the as-received: This seems to be somewhere between ausferrite and bainite because additional heat treatment at 200C, 24hr produces the "typical" bainite structure. I think an SEM analysis will be informative. From a practical...

    Austempered Ductile Iron

mrfailure: No change in hardness (HRC) until 500C. The hardness dropped a 2 points. I know the as-received hardness isn't what you want in an austempered ductile iron. Should be between 35-45 HRC- preferably above 40 HRC in a wear application. I've had other batches where the microstructure had...

    Austempered Ductile Iron

Hello, We have a batch of austempered ductile iron, but the cross-section doesn't look like ausferrite. This image is at 1000x and the etchant is suoer picral. Could this be bainite? The hardness is 27-29 HRC. It's also brittle as heck; I don't need to cut samples instead I just use a vice...

    Cracking of 4140 During Q&T

These types of posts that start out with one question always end up with a 100-more. mfritze. Please go through more of your fish bone analysis and we may be able to get you better. With the info you gave it could have been in the as-received material or resulted from the quenching. UM

difference in Hot Rolled and Cold Rolled material

paintballJim, However is that strength throughout the material or mostly around the surface area? The deformation profile in rolled material is dependent on the size of the rod compared to the size of the rolls. When the size of the rod is large relative to the roller diameter more...

Thanks GonzaloMartinez! Good lunch break read! UconnMaterials

Leaving PhD program against Advisor's will - professional advice please

ResearchEngineer987, I wasn't thrilled with my thesis topic either. Unfortunately, one never gets to pick-and-chose their projects in industry. Maybe your topic isn't interesting or directly relevant to industry; however, you should consider the personal and technical skills learned in graduate...

How to explain the increase or the decrease of the surface roughness after the friction

afry, Have you considered that you may be getting work-piece pickup in the WC tool-piece that is causing the roughness to increase? Do you have an SEM or optical profilometer available? These tools will be valuable in helping you get your answer. Uconmaterials

    Contact area in tribology

afry, The friction coefficient is mathematically independent of the 'apparent' contact area, but the 'real' contact area will influence the friction coefficient. You can see this effect by increasing the contact force during a wear test. As the 'real' contact area increases, more net force can...

    Manufacturing Process Help

Zl93, Metal turning or spinning can either be a cold working process or hot/warm working process. I've seen this process performed on sheet metal in cold working processes. For plate stock, this will most certainly need to be a warm/hot working process. Needless to say the final material will...

    Localize soften BeCu

As Cory recommended use a laser welding unit. We were priced at $30,000 for one. Hopefully you can get a better deal. Uconnmaterials

How Relevant is Graduate School Experience for a Position in Industry?

I think it depends on your field. For example, if you are doing thermal barrier coating research in academia you are going to be competent in the techniques used to evaluate them in industry. The mechanical engineering and materials engineering departments at my school have some industry focused...

How Relevant is Graduate School Experience for a Position in Industry?

Big egos can be one of the most counter-productive problems when working in teams. You don't need a PhD to have a big ego. Heck I've dealt with union machinists that had big egos. The whole problem is that stereotypes can be a barrier for putting people to work.

moltenmetal, "analysis-paralysis" I have to remember that.

How Relevant is Graduate School Experience for a Position in Industry?

IRStuff, I'm not complaining. My original question was why some companies may disregard graduate school experience when looking to hire an engineer. In my view, it doesn't make sense because the materials engineering stuff I do in academia is similar to what I would be doing in industry.
