Agreed.
I, too, need a bit of colour. Perhaps I could get a federal grant for a new Corvette to replace my sad old Toyota. The "colour" would be a very slightly orangish yellow.

Oh.
There is not utmost clarity in the costs related to the fallen bridge. Wikipedia shows the bridge costing $9 million, and the overall project $14.2 million. The bridge is the thingy that spans a distance. Abutments hold it up, and COULD be considered part of the bridge. Elevators are...
I was incorrectly assuming a mid-span pier placed in the median strip. I see that that won't work. So, a single 200' span instead of two 100'.
I'm not following your comment about "two sets of lifts at either end". What is that? And what does it have to do with the price of the bridge...
That's the benefit of using OPM (Other People's Money). In this case, the bottomless pit of Federal money. "Are you sure that'll be enough?"
The Wikipedia page says the bridge cost $9 million. That's the one that failed.
According to this site...
I suggest this video:

It's looking like there might have been a failure in the controls for the variable pitch propeller. or MAYBE a crew failure in the prop operation.

Considering the circumstances (tidal flow, bridge nearby, no tugs attached, no thrusters, low-power engine), one can wonder why no one was in position at the anchors.
I'd hate to be the one to say: "I...
It's been noted by Sal Mercogliano that there was a wake and "bow" wave at the stern of the ship--you can see it in the video as it approaches land. If it was riding with the current, and no power, that would not happen. While there was wind, it didn't look that strong. To me.
So. Sal...
If the column lost support because of removal of the slab, wouldn't the column have dropped, and wouldn't there be cracking in the ceiling as IT dropped?

I'm sure the original building inspector thought it entirely adequate. So, too, the government agency that employed and directed him.
Be assured they take these things Very Seriously.
I wonder if a PE was possibly involved in this project. Maybe. It could happen. Say, are there actually...
I'm probably just being a fuddy duddy, but:
I'd make the roof wider than the walkway. That way you could do a better job of keeping the rain (does it rain in Florida?) off of the pedestrians. I'm sure the "stakeholders" would think that a nice convenience. It's sorta like having the roof...
So they're replacing a crosswalk with a bridge. Again. For $37 million dollars.
It's true that I've seen a goodly number of college students walk into an intersection without looking first for approaching traffic. Perhaps that's the inspiration.
I wonder if it will challenge the...
