The advise of magnetic particle is good, only use a coil and fluoressent fluid.
PT is also possible, I would do that also fluoressent.

I succeeded in measuring the thickness of the rubber layers of conveyorbelts with ultrasonics. Conveyorbelts with fabrick carcas and belts with steelcords inside.
I used 2 MHz and 5 Mhz probes. You must have a testpiece and then look and compare.
