    Would the grand old Pucher charts be useful as well? They have many charts/diagrams for different loading and boundary conditions.

    The engineer usually determines the articulation required for a particular structure depending on how he wishes (or the structure dictates) to accomodate lateral expansion/movement usually thermal. I am not aware of dedicated guidance on the use of bearings but there could CIRIA (UK) literature...
