Yes two of the four enormous earth's coming down from the loft were connected to gas and water pipes and have been slightly changed but essentially retained and refitted.
Epilogue.
I have a highly competent and forensically minded electrician in (He is a semi retired 'Physics Major' in American parlance). On a scale of 1 (very good) to 8 (very bad and must be corrected) my house to the substation earth scored a 2.5. The secondary system was all utter nonsense...
Noted. I may have to pay for the tests but if the problem is 'south' of my meter the fix may be free. Sigh. Yet another dependency. The drive and front garden update will have to wait in case of digging. Fantastic to know these potential issues up front. D
Thanks Scotty, we seem to be burrowing down to the root cause here. Looks like a bad earth misdiagnosed as warros suggested may be one of the reasons for the loft spaghetti. I think it's time to get an electrician in to fix the original earth, check the system out generally, and disconnect the...
I did a little more inspection. See better meter picture attached. It all looks OK but I am no expert. The small wire coming from beneath the four bolts was just a disconnected piece of metal. The 4 wire secondary earth is a piece of copper hammered into the ground (probably right down to the...
Thanks very much for the helpful comments. I think we may be homing in on something here. I'll check out that ground near the meter. Carefully. Very carefully.
Thought you would all like to see some photos too. It's unique. And don't get me started on the 'evolutionary, legacy plumbing' - both electrics and plumbing work very well but Wow.

I have recently bought a 1960's bungalow in the UK which has a highly unusual (but probably safe) 240v electrical wiring arrangement. I thought I'd check with some experts before ripping 50% of it out. I have had no luck polling local electricians who either don't know or don't want to get...
I am designing some custom bushes which must be a phosphor bronze material or very similar.
I have a copy of "BS EN 12163 Copper and copper alloys — Rod for general purposes" in my hand.
The choice is bewildering.
The requirements are:
No lubrication.
Room temperature low humidity environment...
