I think you can estimate the temperature by Joule Thomson co relation. The gas temperature and the wall temperature for all practical purposes can be considered to be the same
Scale forming tendency of water can be reduced by the pH adjustment with acid. But this is not a prefered method as it can take water into the corrosive range to the detriment of the equipment and Tower MOC. I would not recommend PH ajustment with acid. Strict monitoring is required.

In my view , drum dryers are used for large throughput of granulated products. Spray dryers on the other hand can be designed even to handle throughputs in the range of 0.5 - 1 MT / hr. Spray dryers produce fine powder ( spray dried milk powder, detergent powder , some fine chemicals etc. )...
HCl is not recommended for use in high capacity,high purity cation beds. HCl has a tendency to break the molecular links of the resin particles. So over a period of time the life of the resin bed gets reduced.
