Sorry I misread your post. I guess in terms of "AS 2870 vs NCC" it really comes down to what you're comfortable with.
NCC has more strict limitations:
(b) any slab—
(i) is not more than 18 m long or wide; and
(ii) does not contain permanent joints excluding construction joints; and
(iii) is of...
I think you would need to clarify some of the statements. Some of your conclusion contradicts the quotes from the NCC, or needs further clarification to support the conclusions.
What does "legally binding Deemed-to-Satisfy" mean? The deemed-to-satisfy options are not legally binding unless I'm...
Yes, it is mandatory to comply with the NCC. I should clarify that I was only talking about the deemed to satisfy table that the OP was referencing. The mandatory part of the NCC is the performance requirements.
@LiamJS
I agree with you and I'm not saying to not follow the NCC footing table or...
The board says that his design was inadequate but the same design on the same soil profile built 5 years ago was adequate? Am I reading that correctly? Regardless, it probably comes down to details and the defense of the engineer. If the engineer's defense was that the design complied with...
Neither of them are legally binding since they are both deemed to satisfy solutions. Unfortunately the structure of the NCC and the law is not taught in university. I would recommend reading up on Part A2 of the NCC (including "expert judgement") as it will put you ahead of at least 90% of...
The NCC and Australian Standards are written by different groups who have different opinions and different goals.
Regarding the tables, I remember the divergence started with AS2870-2011. If you look at the earlier versions of AS2870 then they should be the same. You would have to confirm this...
Thanks all.
Yes I agree. I am trying to convince the client to just sand blast the corrosion and re-paint, and leave the concrete as-is. They were wanting something that can last another 25 years without touching it. I think sand blasting and repainting should be fine.
The landing is indeed...
Hi All,
I'm designing the refurbishment of a 60 year old building (1960's). Part of it involves replacing a 50mm thick concrete stair landing and tread. The concrete is undamaged. See the photo below.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows how this was designed? There's no corrosion damage or...
Is it a pad footing or a strip footing? I normally see strip footings along the boundary with full grout under the panel. You can then increase the depth of the strip footing to hopefully achieve the required bearing strength.
In my opinion, 12k is way too low. Is the builder or real estate getting less money for duplicate houses? Does the risk of an owner becoming disgruntled and sue you decrease for duplicate houses? Just give a max 30 % to 50% discount for the duplicates.
This is pretty much standard practice in Australia. As far as I can tell based on this forum, it's not popular in the US due to state laws. But there's no state laws here that forbid it; quite the opposite, there's state laws that require an engineer to certify work that they did not prepare or...
:)
As an example, I was just considering ridge vents that are not uncommon in Region D. I assume this would be local region RA4, leading to Kl = 2.
Or a PA door or small window that's failed. Even if the building is designed for full internal pressure, the local pressure factor would be 1.5. I...
I think applying local pressure factors to the entire internal pressure would be a radical change in the loading and in the design of buildings. Based on my experience, looking back at historical design from the last 70 years, I have not seen buildings have random catastrophic failure that would...
The fact is, the owners can already upload their photos to AI and ask it to assess the crack. I'm not sure how the liability would change if you kept the same terms and conditions etc. as the AI company. I think if you are able to make money from it then it's worth tuning the terms and...
Thanks @human909. I'm swamped with work at the moment but I'm planning on doing some targeted emails once work slows down. I'll let you know how it goes.
