    Rated shaft enclousers in PA

I don't see a problem with simply providing fire dampers at each shaft penetration.

Common venting of mutiple clothes dryers?

GE has design guidelines for common vent risers. Go to their website and search for dryer venting guide. There a design for fan-assisted and non-fan assited. I would use the latter and provide a a lint clean-out hatch at the base of the riser.

    Kitchen Exhaust Ductwork

I can't imagine a building code in the world that would allow lined kitchen grease duct. The inside of the grease duct needs to be washable to eliminate the buildup of grease. Duct liner does not lend itself well to washing.

Estimating infiltration with and without interior foyer doors

If the building is pressurized, I assume about 1-2 ACH. Anything more and you're putting way too much air into a transient space. Although it might be a waiting area, there's no need to go nuts with the AC.

    Modeling Exterior Shading in TRACE

I assume this is a permanent shade covering a part of the window? If this is the case, break the window down into two seperate windows. You do this by creating two walls with the common orientation. Model half of the wall with the normal window and associated dimensions and characteristics (SC...

    Prehistoric HVAC engineers

Great post Bravo. You pretty mcuh nailed it, especially the part about life-cycle cost analysis. Historical data for different building systems is scant at best.

Lab hood control by heat sensor

Yes ChasBean I finally had a chance to examine it and it looks exactly like what I'm looking for. Thanks.

Lab hood control by heat sensor

If your apparatus are continuously adding heat to the air stream, then there should not be any chance that your temperature sensor can be cooled off. Therein lies the rub. The heat sources they use under these hoods isn't always continuous. Also, I will guess there's 24" between the heat...

Lab hood control by heat sensor

i thought if that, but I think the equipment they use are bunson burners and plug-in hot plates, not things you can easily meter.

Lab hood control by heat sensor

I'm in the process of designing the ventilation systems for a lab. A couple of the lab hoods simply vent heat from heat generating equipment. Is anyone aware of a sensor I could use to operate the hoods by detecting the radiant heat from the equipment? I'm assuming I can't use a temerature...

    internal temperature conditions

+/- 2[°]C is a wide range. Not to cloud the issue, but you also have to consider the effect of relative humidity. 24[°]C at 50% RH will feel different than 26[°]C and 50% RH. Also, is this temperature range appropriate for the type of clothing being worn in the space? 24[°]C (and...

    Prehistoric HVAC engineers

I agree with the original poster to some degree. Standard 62 was implemented back in 1989, but energy recovery technologies have lagged way behind. How long did it take many of the old salt engineers here to specify heat wheel and heat pipe systems? Also, it took a long time for the big names...

    Elevator Machine Room Ventilation

If you know the manufacturer of the elevator, you can contact their technical sales rep and request equipment room heat gain information.

    Smoke detector

Be careful spec'ing smoke detectors in the supply duct for air handlers with electric strip heaters. During the summer months dust will accumulate on the heaters. The first time the heaters are energized in the fall or winter, the dust will burn off and cause a nuisance trip of the smoke...

    Steam system inspection tips?

Next week i am going to a military base to perform field work for a renovation. The building is served by a campus steam system. The base engineer has asked me to inspect the condition of the existing steam and condensate branch pipes to the building and determine their condition. While i have...
