Working on a barn for storing salt for a DOT. Wall girts are flat 2x6 and 24" trib. Span 8' c/c. Deflection from wind CC is killing me. But what real deflection would be appropriate?

IBC table 1604.3 doesnt really have a value for wind load.

What would you use? I hvae seen L/60?

I'd recommend deferring to the architect or owner. The architectural specifications I've reviewed mention L/80 to L/120.

IBC table 1604.3 has a column for Snow or Wind. Also the notes of that table are important. Note 'a' has L/60 for metal panels and L/90 for secondary wall members supporting metal panel. Note 'f' lets you use a reduction factor or the 10-year MRI maps for deflection.

Definitely use 10 yr MRI wind, it'll give you an extra 0.7 factor to reduce the loading.

I would think L/120 is in the right range. Like others have mentioned, calc out this number and let them decide if that is acceptable or not.

Is the salt going to be piled against the wall like some grain storage or is it piled on the floor only and does not push on the wall?

Strong direction of 2x6 horizontal, or vertical? 2x6 strong direction at 8' long should not be that flimsy.

I see what DanKile noted, my table shows l/120 for exterior walls with flexible finishes but has a footnote f about using reduced wind values. the "a" footnote is good for the entire table and shows the l/60.

Ron,
the salt will be against the walls up to about 4' only.

Weak direction wall girts.

I reduced to 1'-9" spacing, and gonna let it ride!

Thanks

So you have 2x6 flatwise @ 1'-9" O.C. spanning 8 ft with 4 ft. of salt backfill? I don't think I would "let that ride"

Sorry,
There are intermediate columns and continuous wall lagging on the inside for the salt to be piled against.
The wall girts are exterior for the metal siding above that.
Im not that generous with "letting it ride" lol.

I would not rely on them to stop at 4', so cover yourself good with a stern and clear note. Also, require a note to be posted. Also, be cautious about mentally using the words "just and only". It is how we talk ourselves into something that sometimes is not a good idea. Only 4' is still 4'.

I refer to those 2 words as the country and western singer Justin Only. I wanted to buy a boat that was "Just $16,000" and I really emphasized the word "Just". My wife on the other hand told everyone I wanted to buy a boat that was a "Whopping $16,000". She put more emphasis on the "Whopping" than I did the "Just". I still don't own a boat.😒

Forget about a note from my previous post since your girts are not retaining the salt.
