LOST in UHX Tubesheet Calc!!!!

LOST in UHX Tubesheet Calc!!!!

(OP)
Ladies and gentlemen:

I'm LOST in the big amount of formulas and "STEPs" in UHX to obtain the thickness of my tubesheet! Is there any way to simplify this method, no matter if the tubesheet has to be a ticker one???

shell od=16" SA-106-B
72 tubes 1" dia.
175 psi shell side.
Fixed tubesheet. SA-105

My problem is the HE must be stamped per ASME VIII-1, and it involves UHX now. But I just want to have a preliminar idea of required thickness...

RE: LOST in UHX Tubesheet Calc!!!!

NO. You must go through and perform the calculations in accordance with UHX 11.3-11.5, and provide these calc's to the AI for their review. You do not have enough information for a preliminary calc, and making the assumption that thicker is better is not correct. There are NO short cuts when it comes to code calcs.

RE: LOST in UHX Tubesheet Calc!!!!

Code Case 2429 allows you to use the TEMA formulas for calculating tubesheet required thickness up until Dec. 31, 2004.

Check with your local jurisdiction first, though.

Try WWW.CODEWARE.COM THE HOME OF COMPRESS FOR UHX

RE: LOST in UHX Tubesheet Calc!!!!

There can't be more than 40-50 steps, maybe 10-20 pages or so.

Why would that be a problem?

Just kidding-UHX has been sorely needed. Still work to be done. Before you start, review UHX-10(a)very carefully. Do you fall in this area? Also review UHX-20.

RE: LOST in UHX Tubesheet Calc!!!!

Heyner,

I would suggest a software package especially if you will be doing a variety of heat exchanger designs, small differences in shell/channel/tube/or tube sheet dimensions can change the outcome from pass to fail or vice-versa and the software will make it easier to do that iterative process.  That being said, your inspector will want to speak to you and not the software provider if something catches his/her attention.  I would suggest that you carefully read over the sybmol key for UHX 13 (fixed tube sheets) and that you follow one of the example problems.  Then for simplicity, make a hypothetical vessel with simple geometries and with the shell and channel integral with the tube sheet (configuration a).  Just follow through the steps.  I will warn you though that the bessel functions are not fun at all.  Good luck.  I will continue to follow this thread if you need further assistance.

RE: LOST in UHX Tubesheet Calc!!!!

Remember if you use the Code Case and start contruction of a vessel after 12/31/04 you will still need to do the calcs.  This was only for some breathing room.

RE: LOST in UHX Tubesheet Calc!!!!

On my last job (similar to this one)my AI forced me to, analyze per Miller Analysis as well and it was no fan at all.

Heyner (Mechanical) and Team Member no need to be unemployed:

The following Enginering Tool's will keep you working

www.Codeware.com The Home of Compress ASME and TEMA Exchanger programs for heat exchanger design:

Floating tubesheets are now available

The programs now cover floating tubesheet type heat exchangers. The following constructions have been included:

ASME UHX Type (a) (TEMA types S and T)

ASME UHX Type (b) (TEMA type P)

ASME UHX Type (c) (TEMA type W)

Floating tubesheet heads can be specified as spherically dished, ellipsoidal or F&D.

TEMA RCB-5.141 Style "A", Style "B", Style "C" and Style "D" floating head backing ring configurations, typically used with TEMA type S exchangers, have also been added.

The kettle option is now active for ASME u-tube and floating tubesheet kettle style reboilers (TEMA shell type K) for ASME UHX u-tube and floating tubesheet type heat exchangers, also double cone reboilers including TEMA fixed tubesheet types.

RE: LOST in UHX Tubesheet Calc!!!!

I am updating our calcs for tubesheets to be in compliance with the new UHX section of ASME. Does anyone have a way to calculate Po?

RE: LOST in UHX Tubesheet Calc!!!!

Heyner,

If you are looking at software packages take a look at the Heat Exchanger Module for Advanced Pressure Vessel at computereng.com  It covers part UHX (all configurations for U-Tube, Fixed, and Floating), Appendix 5, Appendix 26, and Tube-to-Tubesheet welds, it also includes a standard tube database, the ability to design custom tubes, most tema types, and much more.
