Achieving Full Pen Weld from one side

Achieving Full Pen Weld from one side

(OP)
Hi There,

I am looking for a procedure to qualify weld done from one side only with out any backing or backgouging as a full pen weld for a corner joint. the issue is this weld will be for a box with a rectangular section. The material is Carbon steel & the process i would like to use is FCAW.
The thickness i am looking for test is 3/4".

Has any one done this before and qualified a procedure.

Thank you

Gayaz.

What code are you working to?

If this is a structural application using the D1.1, then procedure qualfification will be required in accordance with Section 4 of the code. Without backing or backgouging, this would not be a prequalified joint detail in accordance with Section 3 of the same code.

RE: Achieving Full Pen Weld from one side

Best to qualify this procedure with ceramic backing if you have access to remove the backing after completion of welding. If not possible to access from second side, you may go for fCAW without backing, but you will need to qualify a Procedure for the same.

Thanks and regards

If it moves, train it...if it doesn't move, calibrate it...if it isn't written down, it never happened!
