Antennas for short range HDTV testing...

Antennas for short range HDTV testing...

we would like to make some tests for HDTV, and we need to set up a short range transmission (max 5m). I would like to know if I can use a simple VHF/UHF dipole antenna, to transmit and another dipole to receive? If not, what antenna should I use?

Thank you for your help!

RE: Antennas for short range HDTV testing...

I hear that HDTV has a gorilla size problem regarding multipath antenna receptions. i.e. the signal arriving directly from the TV station and the signal that bounces off your roof or nearby tree. Friends of mine at Sonora Designs who make electronics for cable TV say that the processing in the HDTV can handle about 10 nanoseconds, or equivalently 10 feet of delay between the direct signal and the second multipath signal before alot of white dots appear and the picture gets terrible.

What frequency antenna do you want to make? You can also just take a coax. cable and strip the outer jacket to make any frequency antenna. Make the center conductor come out 1/4 wavelength, or about Length (inches) = 3000/frequency(in Megahertz), so at 300 Mhz 3000/300= 10 inches. To improve it's bandwidth you can add (solder or metal) more metal to the center conductor, making it physically wider. Essentially make it look like a flag to improve the bandwidth.
