WHAT IS THE RULE OF THUMB THESE DAYS FOR INSTALLING A SUCTION STRAINER ON SHIP BOARD PIPING SYSTEMS COMING FROM A SEA CHEST?SUCTION STRAINER ON SUCTION SIDE OF A CENTRIFICAL PUMP AS IN FIREMAIN,SEA WATER COOLING,ETC.?
I SEE STRAINERS ON VANE PUMPS TO OILY WATER TRANSFER PIPING SYSTEMS.
IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN 20 YEARS AND MORE YOU WOULD USUALLY SEE A SUCTION STRAINER ON THE SUCTION SIDE.

My book is a little out of date (1979 ABS rules) but section 36.23.3 states sea chests are to be fitted with strainer plates at the vessels side. The strainers are to have a clear area of at least 1.5 times the area of the sea valves and efficient means are to be provided for clearing the strainers.

Cheers

Steve

Besides the strainer plate at the sea chest(as mentioned by smckennz) which is also required by the 2004 ABS rules, it is standard practice to install one more full size cleanable filter before the pumps
