We have bought our piping to ASTM and are installing, on a remote desert, site (which is where I am now) to B31.3.

The planning is not too great and there is much pipe handling going.

There was spool pre-fabrication off site in-country and there are numerous welding habitats dotted about the site.

Consequently we are getting some handling damage in the form of flats spots, particularly on the larger diameters and (relatively) thin wall. Most are relatively benign and are not to sharp or stress raising.

We are looking for information on acceptance criteria. B31.3 and ASTM appear silent on the subject.
We have criteria for the pipelines but that is probably based on the requirements for pigging.

We just need to establish a practical agreed criteria.

Can anyone help?

Kindly note the following:

1.  ASME B31.3

    1.1  302.4.1 Where required the wall thickness shall be
         increased to prevent overstress.....damage...
         backfill, transportation or any other cause.

2.  ASME B31.4

    2.1  434.4 Handling, Stringing, etc care shall be taken
         in handling....pipe, etc to prevent damage.  Pipe
         shall not be allowed to drop..strike objects which
         will dent, flatten, distort, etc the pipe...

         2.1 (b) Pipe shall be inspected before assembly..
                 Distortion, dent, etc and all defects
                 shall be prevented or repaired,,,,

         2.2  Refer to items 1,2,4,7&6 of this clause.

         2.3  436.5.1 Visual
             (a) Material
        ( 1 ) All piping ...... shall be inspected to
              insure that no ,,,,,, damage has
              occurred during shipment & handling prior to
              being connected .......
        ( 2 ) All pipe shall be ,,,,, inspected to discover
              any defects as .described in paras. 434.5 and

         2.4   A434.4
               .......Transportation of line pipe shall
               conform to the requirements of API RP 5LW or
               API RP 5L1, as applicable.  

3. ASME B31.8

   Refer to pages 36 & 37.

Thanks PVRV.
There were only half a dozen cases and we have told them that they are unacceptable.
Two were not too bad but it is difficult to come up with a precise criteria. I do not like rejecting things out of hand as it discourages people from bringing things to someone's attention. Usually everything has a tolerance / acceptance criteria.

Perhaps the sub-contractor will take more care with the handling.
Our engineering people say it is new and should be as such when the piping is installed.
