Soil mechanics

(OP)
Hi all! I want to find researchers in soil mecanics for discussions. My question is how to determine the draft force, acting on soil cutting disc-knife???

RE: Soil mechanics

I have questions in the area of soil also.  I suspect that much information may be kept proprietary by each manufacturer.

Long shot would be the rheology forum at this site.

RE: Soil mechanics

please do check the book Agricultural Engineering Soil Mechanics by Elsevier Science or Journal of Terramechanics or Jurnal of Soil Tillage by Elsevier Science also (science direct)

RE: Soil mechanics

Hi there kyuv.

I am currently studying something very similar (looking into bulldozing blades) and have quite a few references that I think will be useful for you. I am a little busy at the mo but will try and compile a list for you tonight.

The Mechanics of Soil Cutting Blades
Journal of Agricultural Engineering Research 1964, 9 (No. 4)
M.S Osman

Soil Dynamics in Tillage and Traction
Agricultural Handbook No. 316

Gill W.R. & Vanden Berg G.E. 1968

Theory of Bulldozer Action in Friable Soil
P.E.R Cook & A.R. Reece
Proceedings of the Second International Conference of the International Society for Terrain Vehicle Systems August 29 – September 2, 1966

University of Toronto Press

Several Articles In:
Proceedings of the 9th European Conference of the ISTVS,
Harper Adams University College
UK, Sept 2003

The Fundamental Equation of Earth Moving Mechanics
A.R. Reece
Proceedings of the Instn Mech Engrs 1964-65

Also look up work by Daniel Hettiaratchi, and P.C.J Payne. All of the references above do have their own references which does prove useful. One that I think will be particularly useful for discs is the second one down. As well check out these websites.

Hope this helps

RE: Soil mechanics

(I hope this posting is still timely.)  The principles for estimating the draft force on cutting blades is similar/identical to the resistance to horizontal translation of vertical and inclined plate anchors for earth retaining structures of for undersea anchorage.  A helpful source is a comprehensive 1964 technical report by N. Krebs Ovesen (Danish Geotechnical Institute).  Also, several papers were published in the Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division of the ASCE and also Ground Engineering in the mid-to-late 1970's (Das; Neely; Akinmusuru; Naval Civil Eng. Lab, Port Hueneme; etc.)
