We have built a quencher in Hastelloy C276. The purpose is to saturate a gas (air + HCl 1000 mg/Nm3 @ 200°C) with a 4% aqueous HCl solution. The gas outlet is at 85°C.

After 8 monthes running we watch corrosion on hastelloy C 276.
Has anybody an explanation ?
Thank you

RE: Hastelloy C 276

If you have any oxidizing conditions you will have corrosion of C-276. You can get an oxidizing condition with your setup. I was involved with a similiar problem. Idle or slow flow conditions can get you in trouble due to the formation of 27° baume HCl as a condensation product, which if saturated with Oxygen can be oxidizing.

RE: Hastelloy C 276

don't beilive c276 is suited for weak acid at 200 oC

you might try an alternate technology based on direct quenching

Thak you, Unclesyd and Hacksaw for your answer.
Hacksaw what do you mean by direct quenching ?

RE: Hastelloy C 276

common to use direct sprays to quench gases(licensed technology and several designs are available). this results in the greatest cooling rate (or can) and is used to advantage where the metal temperatures must be kept low.

RE: Hastelloy C 276

What type of corrosion "pitting" ?if not; please elborate else refer to unclesyd post.  What coatings, were considered if any.
