Corrosion rates of Carbon Steel in Sulphuric/Chloride environment ?

Corrosion rates of Carbon Steel in Sulphuric/Chloride environment ?

(OP)
Hi,
does anybody know where I can get an idea of corrosion rates of Carbon Steel ? Specifically in a high temp, chloride sulphuric acid environment?

A special lining on a tank has failed due to large particle erosion. The steel shell is suspected to be exposed and I would like to be able to get a rough estimate of expected time of tank failure.

Thanks,
Ronan

RE: Corrosion rates of Carbon Steel in Sulphuric/Chloride environment ?

The Materials Technology Institute of the Chemical Process Industries (MTI) has publications and some software that deal with corrosivity of concentrated as well as dilute/intermediate concentrations of sulfuric acid.  The link is http://www.mti-link.org.

If the acid is hot as you indicated, I'm afraid you may find out how corrosive it can be before you get the MTI literature.

the corrosion rate of c.s. in acid-chlorides is pretty high measured in inches per year depending on the temperature and acid strength.
