# stiffened column base plates

## stiffened column base plates

(OP)
Is there any text or reference in order to make the design calculations for a stiffened column base plate???  How do I analize it

### RE: stiffened column base plates

Yes! There are lots of texts, for example see 'Structural Engineering Handbook' by Gailord&Gailord. It consists solved examples. However an exact solution is not accessible for such a problem, conventional solutions are developed based on engineering judgement and fullfilling equilibrium reqirements. You normally stiffen a base plate to get rid of a pseude-cantilever beam that base plates are designed in accordance with. You then will have to deal with rectangular pannels restrained either in two or three sides and loaded uniformly or trapezoidally normal to the plane. There are formulas to estimate max. bending moments of such pannels for different length/ depth ratios and different edge restraints. You can also estimate reactions on the reistrainted edges to calculate the size of the stiffeners.
Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the answer, does that structural engineering handbook works with asd or lrfd design.  Does it have other good resources for steel design??? I also have questions regardind the design of rigid single span steel frames with knees with the LRFD method.  I looked at an article from aisc but its a little old and merely comprehensible, where can I find more info on that matter
