Thermal growth
Thermal growth
(OP)
How can i determin (or make an educated guess at) the thermal growth of an engine in the vertical plane (upward), when no specifications are available? More specificly i'm loking for the exact thermal growth of the MTU 2000 & 4000 Marine diesel engine. I'm trying to determin the amount of offset necessary to compensate for thermal growth, flywheel sag and oil film lift of the crankshaft.

RE: Thermal growth
2) measure from fixed point to the point of concern, take measurements in X (horizontal) and or Y (vertacial)
3) determine the average temperture change between this points and the coefficient of expansion for the materaial. For most steels I use 0.007/0.001"/F
4) multiply (distance)X (delta tempurture)X (coefficient of expansion)
for example a 36" bearing support to journal, experiancing going from room 78F to running 250F would grow 0.043"
