centerless grind

centerless grind

centerless grind

(OP)
What tooling or machine features are used to grind a stainless steel rod,.150 dia by 30 inches long.  And now the tough part,  the rod needs .002 taper per inch.  At the small end the stock removal will be .025 per side.

RE: centerless grind

You could do this on a plunge type centerless grinder.  I imagine the set-up would be trial and error to get the correct angle.

RE: centerless grind

KMI.  It's the machinery division of Koyo (the same people who make bearings and steering gears).  The largest model I know of it is the KC900 which uses a wheel 35.4 inches wide.
We have a couple of KC700 machines where I work and they are pretty reliable machines.

RE: centerless grind

Why do you need a grinder with a 30" wide wheel?

RE: centerless grind

a 30 inch wheel would operate as the best known controls do today.  ie Dress the angle on the wheel then, infeed the wheel to the part.  A narrower wheel requires tracking of the end of the part to produce the taper.  It is possible to infeed a 6 inch wide wheel and then though feed the balance of the rod using a control system to move the size control mech as the part moves thru the grinder to create the taper.
