I have seen water infiltration issues a few times with residential basements and crawlspaces. I would like some information on how to prevent/handle it (not professionally - more for my knowledge). I am not sure of the even the correct terms to use. Would you guys be able to recommend some books that I could read to obtain more information on the subject? I also wouldn't be opposed to pretty pictures :)

It all comes down to detailing of your waterproofing system. your water proofing system could include your drainage pipe, drainage back fill, filter sock, drainage board against wall etc.

I dont think you will find it in a book, in proper detail. review threads here. then also search proprietary suppliers details for waterproofing and take everything thats said with a pinch of salt as they are trying to sell you stuff!!

Also, follow water proofing specialists on linkedin. They often post usefull real world problems and solutions!

Are there any white papers or anything else that you guys recommend?

ditto to Eirechch's comments. I used to do a lot of building envelope consulting at a different company that had a lot of senior roofing/waterproofing consultants. You're just not going to find robust technical information on foundation drains that isn't married to a waterproofing product. Any research you might stumble upon will be done on the total package of drain and waterproofing together and it will be funded by the waterproofing manufacturer... or perhaps the drainboard manufacturer. The drain board manufacturers have absolutely ZERO interest in trying to market their product as a stand-alone solution that doesn't need waterproofing to function. You can only REDUCE or MITIGATE water intrusion by better drainage, but you will never PREVENT water intrusion with better drainage.
