Tangential Modulus of Soil

Tangential Modulus of Soil

Tangential Modulus of Soil

(OP)

Hello all,

Hope all of you are doing well.

I am trying to find papers on the modulus of elasticity of sand, specifically the initial tangential modulus and how to estimate it? and the different correlations available in the literature.

So I am wondering if any of you know of some really good papers or articles that cover this subject?

Cheers!

RE: Tangential Modulus of Soil

Most of the time modulus of sand is determined from correlations with SPT, CPT and other instiu tests. For example a standard correlation is 1 x your SPT N value= youngs modulus in MPa. That youngs modulus is typically an E50 modulus.

If you want a tangent modulus you need a stress strain curve which you can get from a reconstituted triaxail compression test.

Hello EireCHch,

Thank you for your reply.

Does that mean that all correlations reported in the literature are for the secant value of the modulus?

Majority of the papers in the literature do not indicate what modulus they are using whether its the tangential or the secant. Is it safe to say that they are reporting the secants in their correlations with CPT and SPT?

Thanks!
