From the fundamentals of mechanics of solids, how does metal to metal seal itself when subjected to high clamping force, such as in the application of ring joint gaskets ?

How does a small gap prevent larger items from fitting through the gap?

ANSI/ASME B16.5 & B16.47 Ring Type Joint Flanges deform Elastically and plasticlly at the sealing contact line.

Similar to the "Copper Washer". All metal to metal sealing = regardless of geometry works this way.
