Just an answer to the question:
So, there are mainly two sections of a phthalic anhydride plant, if we exclude utilities, bagging, and storage.
1: Oxidation
2: Distillation
Now, note that the oxidation is the main energy consuming process here. Distillation is mostly by gravity.
Once the crude PA has formed, that is after the switch condensers, the crude PA is at your disposal to refine through distillation. You can refine it as soon as it is produced or you can store it, of course you wouldn't want to do because of all extra energy(electricity) costs that incur with only distillation sections running.
The storage vessels come in handy when there is a problem at distillation. The crude PA is continued to be formed and the pure PA will only be obtained once it goes through distillation columns.
