Bearing capacity near vertical cut
Bearing capacity near vertical cut
(OP)
Engineers,
I know that NAVFAC (DM 7.2) provides guidance of how to estimate the bearing capacity of footings on slopes or near slopes. I noticed the steepest slope they consider is B = 40 degrees.
I was wondering if there is any other reference which estimates the bearing capacity of soils near vertical cuts?. I understand that slope stability plays a roll in this analysis however, I would like to estimate the bearing capacity considering that condition as you may know it should be less than bearing capacity on level ground.
Thanks.

EireChch,
I think you are referring to the NAVFAC - DM 7.2 approach that Das includes in his book.
That approach is for slope as steep as 40 degrees. The question is, how to compute the bearing capacity when structures are close to vertical cuts or fills.
Thanks.

The bearing capacity formulas are based on the assumed failure plane which if you put next to a slope are reduced you are then left to either modify the formula to account for the reduced resistance of put it through a slope stability program which you can replicate the failure plane on flat ground then modify the slope from there.
