BOM Quantities

BOM Quantities

BOM Quantities

(OP)
I have a simple assembly of 12 different parts. There are two configurations of this assembly. The only difference between the two configurations is the presence or absence of a few parts. Is it possible to set up a BOM with two quantity columns in which the absence of certain parts is indicated by a zero quantity? Does anyone have an easier suggestion on how to properly document two different configurations on one BOM?

RE: BOM Quantities

Select the BOM (upper-left cross), in tree at left select Configurations drop down. Select boxes you want to see.
The part/assy not used in a specific Config will show "-", which is zero qty.

ctopher, Thank you! is there a way to show two separate Quantity columns, one for each configuration?

RE: BOM Quantities

When you select the config boxes, they should auto add. Play with the option to get what you want.

Tried again. The BOM Properties dialog box will not allow me to select more than one configuration. The selection method isn't in the form of "check boxes". It's "choose one from this drop down list". (I'm running SW2021 if that makes a difference.)

Any other ideas on how to have more than one quantity column in a single BOM?

RE: BOM Quantities

If your assy has more than one config they should show.
If not, you can right-click on top of Qty column and insert new column.

All the assembly configurations do indeed show up on that drop down list I mentioned, but it allows me to select only one of those configurations.

And yes, I can add columsn to a BOM. I can select from a lot of different options for the properties of that inserted column, but "quantity" is not one of those options.

Am I missing something obvious here? I appreciate your help!

RE: BOM Quantities

Are you using "Top-level only" as your BOM type?

I only see the option to choose multiple configurations in the Bill of Materials using the "Top-level only" radio button.

RE: BOM Quantities

Hi, Jboggs:

You have two assemblies. Why do you want to have a single BOM to show both assemblies? Do you make prints per ASME Y14 or ISO 1101 standards?

Best regards,

Alex

"Why do you want to have a single BOM to show both assemblies?"
For the convenience of internal users. All I'm really trying to do is indicate the presence or absence of selected components by showing "0" in the quantity column for certain configurations.

"Do you make prints per ASME Y14 or ISO 1101 standards?"
No. Thank God!

RE: BOM Quantities

Hi Jboggs,

I have prints with many more than 2 assemblies and use this methodology with great success.
For instance,

Were you able to see if "Top-level only" was your BOM type in Solidworks?

RE: BOM Quantities

(OP)
That is exactly what I'm trying to do. Are those quantity values SW driven or manual?

My BOM setting is Top Level Only at the moment.

RE: BOM Quantities

The values are Solidworks driven.

Just as you are trying to accomplish, I am not manually typing any of those values in.
The values are simply generated by the QTYs of each part number present in the different configurations.

I'm kind of sad that I don't have further knowledge on what your issue might be.
I've never encountered any configurations being greyed out in the configurations selection area.
I don't always feel good about Solidworks, but using part and assembly configurations and seeing these BOMs actually work correctly is one of the few bright spots.

here are my settings from that BOM if it helps you to compare.

RE: BOM Quantities

Here are my settings for one of the assembly configurations.

Hopefully there's a breadcrumb in there somewhere.

What version are you running? We just installed SW Premium 2023 and this is the BOM Properties box I see:

Note that the Configurations option selection is a "drop down menu" which only allows me to select ONE of the available options, and no more.

RE: BOM Quantities

Right-click each config, select properties. Select box under Description "Use in bill of materials".

Quote (Jboggs)

What version are you running?

We are running 2022 SP5, but I'm hoping ctopher might have hit the nail on the head.
If you look at my previously posted snip, we do have "Use in bill of materials" checked.
Let us know if that's it and it works.

RE: BOM Quantities

The one part that I always struggle with, adding the config's to a BOM and can't show the Qty for each one. It only shows "QTY".
(still on 2019, waiting for IT to update)

RE: BOM Quantities

Yeah the behavior of the QTY cells is weird. At some point over the years, ours started acting very strange and unpredictable and we learned that "Show all configurations" had somehow become a determining factor (for us).

Ours were checked, and it was locking us in to an odd format and overwriting our attempts to format the BOM how we wanted.
Luckily, after we were made aware, simply unchecking that option was the solution in our case.

Thanks

Thanks guys for an enlightening discussion. I'll dig deeper.
