Moment releases continuous vs pinned

Moment releases continuous vs pinned

(OP)
Hi !

I have done simple truss analysis in SAP2000 while mistakenly providing moment releases of members as continuous instead pinned while I'm drawing the truss. However, later I changed the releases by Assign>Frame>Releases/Partial fixity>ticked all releases except axial load. However, still, I'm receiving bending moments for the members. Can anyone tell me the reason? glasses

RE: Moment releases continuous vs pinned

If they are in fact all modeled as pinned, you would need some kind of load along the member not at a node. I uniform load on the top chord or member self-weight will cause this effect. Sloppy un-merged modeling where the members are not quite aligned at the nodes will also cause member moment.

RE: Moment releases continuous vs pinned

The model attached does not have the members modelled as pinned. Select all of the members and release moments at either end.

RE: Moment releases continuous vs pinned

I agree with kjm93, that model does not have any member end releases assigned to the truss elements.
