May you Recommend good engineering books?

I'd first try looking on the web site of an engineering school. Many of them will have a link (eventually) to a list of books required for each class.

What sort of engineering - there are dozens of different areas.

The PE review books for your area of study are always a good start. And they don't have to be the "latest editions"; the basic principles don't change much. You can probably get a used Civil Engineering PE review book from the early 1990s that would teach you a lot about the essentials of civil and structural engineering. Then you can go to a uni for a full degree.
