Nailing into the 1.5" wide face of a stud
Nailing into the 1.5" wide face of a stud
(OP)
Does the NDS have any load provisions for using a dowel type fastener (nail, lag screw etc.) into the 1.5" wide face of a typical 2x4 stud? If so, what section is it in?
I do not see any mention of edge distance. We have a situation where we have to put multiple lags into a wall stud. Worried about splits in the future.

The concern is splitting the wood since the center distance is not 4d = .92" < .75" provided.

Their tag line is that they "replace" 3/8" lag screws... but I have mic'd them at 3/16"
I think an ICC report I have read lists them at .190" (seems close enough).
Commentary says 2.5D for edge distance so... I THINK they are ok.

Not saying one can't justify the load sharing that way but I have not heard of doing it (and have always thought that one could not do that).
Maybe it's OK. I'd be interested in seeing where that (load sharing between fasteners of different stiffnesses) is allowed.
