Time for the annual list of words, from the previous year, that we should all be working hard to banish from our vocabularies:

‘Wait, What?’ Quip Tops University’s Annual Banished Words List
Other phrases that should stay in 2021 include, "no worries," "the new normal," and "supply chain."

Thanks John:
I'm missing the link; I cannot find the list of 10 banished words. They skirt around it, but don't provide a list, or I cannot find it.

No problems with most of those. I hate them too. But as to "no worries", that may mean different things to different folks, but it is embedded in the Australian vernacular to signify agreement, the same as "all right". Doesn't an obscure school in Michigan have better things to do?

RE: They've published the list the words from 2021 which should be banished...

A ten item list and they get world-wide exposure seems like a decent trade.

I am Italian, so forgive me : when I hear "no worries" I always remember this

Lake Superior State University is hardly an "obscure school in Michigan". It's a fully accredited state university offering a broad curriculum, including the first degree granting program for individuals wishing to make a career in the Cannabis industry.

Has anyone other than John ever heard of Lake Superior State University? If not, I think 'obscure' fits the bill.

RE: They've published the list the words from 2021 which should be banished...

should be a "banished phrase list", not "words".

hokie66, probably a fake uni.

RE: They've published the list the words from 2021 which should be banished...

pmover,

I don't think it is a fake school, just one not well known. But I understand the suspicion, as the original link by JRB was to HuffPost, which does publish a lot of fake stuff.

I know the school is real because my best friend Dennis attended there while it was still the branch campus of MTU (Michigan Technological University). After two years, he transferred to the main campus in Houghton, MI.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Superior_State_...

Besides, I've actually been on the campus. Dennis and I did one of our famous 'road trips', across the UP (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan, and we stopped there to look around, including a visit to his old dorm room (we also tipped a few at his favorite old watering hole):

August 2008 {Sony A100)

Of course, we later had to stop at my old dorm room on the main campus:

August 2008 {Sony A100)

Despite the fact that this branch campus was closer to where I lived, I decided to go straight to the main campus when I started school. After Dennis transferred, he finished his degree at MTU the same year that I did, 1971.

And speaking of their 'Cannabis Business' program:

So while it's true that Lake Superior State University may be the smallest state University in Michigan, it's still a very reputable school, and if you check the Wiki entry, you'll see that he has some very substantial engineering programs, including one of the best robotics labs in the midwest.

That being said, at the end of the day it wasn't in either of my kids' supply chain of schools to apply to, even after a deep dive, but no worries. Just to circle back, getting rejected by your safety school appears to be a new normal; it's like you're on mute.

Good luck trying to get "No worries" banned here in Australia!

A couple of other Aussie expressions spring to mind to describe the LSSU "Banished Words List":

"As useful as a chocolate teapot"
"As useful as an ashtray on a motorbike"
"As useful as t!ts on a bull"

Tiger Guy, sharp as a marble is only different in the degree of sharpness than sharp as a tack, therefore I would conclude its acceptable.

Never, ever, bought that whole "didn't inhale" bit. Graduated from high school in '78. Never deliberately partook of anything of the sort. But I went to concerts and I went to movies. Can't honestly say I never inhaled.

I'm late to the pahty and behind as usual. I wanted to mention that I'm a fan of "no worries". It makes me think of crocodile dundee. It's a laid back way to say I agree, and whatever you may have felt bad/embarrassed about, don't worry because I don't care.

RE: They've published the list the words from 2021 which should be banished...

my own banned word ...
"game-changer"

"no worries" = "no probs" (short for no problems) = NA "you're welcome"
typical rejoiner to "thank you"

who would ever accuse Ozzies of being "laid back" ?

We haven't lost the meaning, we've lost the HiFi (excluding the gear only tech millionaires can afford).

Stereo components in the 70s were actually HiFi. Unlike today's throwaway IC-boarded, cheap transformered, even cheaper capped, plastic wrapped, LED-adorned, pseudo multi-channel boxes.
