How to test whether a plastic film is made of polyethylene PE or PVC as opposed to other materials?

If destructive testing is okay, try looking up "flame test" or "burn test".

Both are described as having blue flames with yellow tips. However, PVC will extinguish upon removal of the flame source while PE will continue to burn.
