Hello All,

which type of gasket is ideal to use for easy installation of DN2600 butterfly valve? Ring type or Full face flange Gasket?

DN2600 PN16 butterfly valve has raised face flanges.
I want to select EPDM gasket for valve installation to pipe Flange.

Is it good to select ring type or Full face type Flange Gasket for easy installation of valve? Pls suggest with your experiences.

Considering you have a PN16 raised face flange you won’t be able to use a full face gasket as you won’t get compression past the raised face portion.

It would be sensible to specify the material you want to use I.e. EPDM, the shore hardness required and the raised face and bore dimensions to a supplier of gaskets for them to advise on the thickness and precise dimensions to use for the gasket?

If it was me, I would opt for a full face gasket - being retained on the pipe flange, with a few/several bolts inserted, as the joint gets made up - makes the installation easier. Especially with such a large diameter; floppy gaskets are a pain. The other possibility would be to use some type of adhesive (rubber cement/contact adhesive) to hold the gasket in place as the joint is made up, but rubber cement and EPDM is not a good match. A liberal coating of silicone grease on the gasket face can help it stick/stay flat to the flange, it's what we use for EPDM gaskets and o-rings.

A full face gasket will seal just as well as a ring gasket, both have area outside of the raised face that does not get compressed. Ring type gaskets are cheaper (less material) and usually are what the purchaser specifies if the engineer/installer doesn't.

The other option is to use wafer type valves, with integral sealing surfaces, no gasket required.

Yes. I will request Gasket supplier to suggest the thickness. Because no gasket standard is saying about thickness.

Is it a wafer body or with flanges on both end?

2.6m is a pretty big valve alright.

I don't think thickness of gasket changes with diameter.

Btrueblood, nicely noted everything which is not recommended practice.

If you were to read ASME PCC-1 it would show you for joint integrity the gasket should be suitable for the flanges it is used on; no lubricants or sealant should be applied to the gasket faces or the flange faces.

Installation of a ring gasket should be done with a saddle of bolts loosely bolted together first then the gasket is located before pulling the joint up.

Yes. It is not recommended to use any sealant/glue. Especially for water applications.

But to avoid the floppy of gasket/to make sure the gasket stands flat during installation, I think full face gasket is good to go for such big valves.

May I know which standard you follow for gasket dimensions pls..

One or several gasket/number of valves? 2 pcs (one each side) per valve? Fluid and temperature? Expected life-time and service intervals?

For this diameter I suspect that the gasket could be a non-stock item. Anyway the price difference between a stock item and a special made gasket will probably not be very significant.

Conclusion: Go for the best suited gasket material, and the easiest to mount and demount, probably as btrueblood suggest, Anyway using standard flange bolts/holes to help mount and posistioning.

Or: If flanges still have to be fabricated ring-type could be the best choice. In this case ring and gasket geometry and material have to be given by a gasket producer/specialist.
