[ASK] ASTM Code for alloy steel with yield 40ksi -140ksi ?

[ASK] ASTM Code for alloy steel with yield 40ksi -140ksi ?

(OP)
Hello,

Probably someone here has expertise on low alloy steel and may help me on this.
i am creating material specification for my product which designed to be on range 40-140KSI yield strength, which the material i used is alloy steel, 41XX.
Do someone know, what code of ASTM or other standard that covered standard for 40-140KSI alloy steel ? Due i need this standard for reference of my material spec.

Before many thanks

ASTM A514? It's a HSLA steel within your range.

ASTM specs are not arranged by strength, but by alloy group, product form and general application.
If you want to use 41xx steels that is fine, but you need to know the product forms (bar, rod, plate) in order to find the correct specs.

In my case we need Seamless and Bar of alloy steel 41XX sir, do you know what ASTM code is covered this requirement ?

ASTM A29, then.

Go to your ASTM index and look for "low alloy steel bar".
Read A29 and see if it fits your application.

ASTM A29, then.

Sir, if i refer to A29, the standard only covered chemical properties. Firstly sorry i actually really nubie on material specificatio, Correct me if i am wrong.
As i know material specification shall refer to standard either chemical and mechanical properties, in my case i know the range mechanical properties used for my product due my design calculation, but how can i find the standard that meets with my design requirement ?

what i worry is when auditing, the auditor will ask "where you find the mechanical requirement ? when the standard only stated chemical properties ?"

can i say, "from my design calculation ?"

Surely need you enlightenment about this, many thanks

In ASTM there are a hierarchy of specs.
There are General specs which cover large classes of material and contain all of the various requirements that Might be required in specific application. This prevents repeating all of this information. A29 is one of these.
Then there are Product specs. These cover a specific group of alloys in a specific product form. This will contain chemistries and mechanical properties, if no properties are listed then it likely tells you how to go about specifying them, sometimes this is in a Supplemental Requirement. Look in A29 section 1 at the list of product specs that it covers, what you want in in that list. (likely either A322 or A434)
If there is testing required then there will be references to the applicable "E" specs also.
In the ASTM world any final spec involves you being familiar with 4-8 other specifications also. And you had better own copies and know what they say, they are basis of your contracts.

If I were a designer, I would look in the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Materials Manual, which includes tables of specified properties as well as actual and design properties at various temperatures. The tables list for ASME materials but they should apply in most cases to the equivalent ASTM materials.
