Cellophane (regenerated cellulose) adhesive

Cellophane (regenerated cellulose) adhesive

Cellophane (regenerated cellulose) adhesive

(OP)
Hi all --

There was a thread on gluing cellophane (i.e. regenerated cellulose) to plastics here about 10 years ago. I've been trying to find adhesives for cellophane, but have failed so far. I am trying to make a small floatation device for dialysis which requires a leak-proof seal between an inert hydrophobic plastic (suitable ones are polypropylene, HDPE, polyethylene, nylon, PTFE) and a hydrophilic cellophane membrane. The solution has salts and detergents, and is used between 4 and 20C. I have so far tested various epoxies, and the membrane comes. Other glues, like cyanoacrylate, penetrate into the membrane and destroy it.

Thank you in advance!

RE: Cellophane (regenerated cellulose) adhesive

Cellophane swells a lot in water so attaching it to another plastic that does not swell is going to be a challenge. Can you use some sort of mechanical clamp to attach the swelled cellophane to the other plastic?

You can try a silicone sealant to adhere the film to something else and cover the edges with more sealant to form a type of frame around the film.
