control valve re-sizing

HI,

for control valve resizing (to a bigger size, to handle more flow), does it have to be increasing the valve body size also or only changing the valve internals (trim) is enough ? and who makes this decision, is it the engineer or the sizing software results ?

Your comments please.
 
It's fine in this forum. Control valves fall under this topical area, and typically not piping.

The engineer first typically evaluates whether increasing the trim only will provide the required flow with the given body size. If the maximum trim for a given body size won't provide the required flow, then the body size will need to be increased and a trim selected that meets the flow spec. The engineer typically performs these analyses using sizing software. The engineer makes the final decision based on the analyses.
