I have a small pedestrian bridge, 90psf, H5 loading.

How do you handle braking forces for a pedestrian bridge? 25% of the H5 load seems excessive. Designing for it is controlling the pile design and is upping the number of piles required to reduce the lateral demand on the piles (timber pile bents) for service to keep lateral deflections under 1". Strength is fine.

Considering that AASHTO doesn't even require to consider impact for the H5 on a pedestrian bridge, is it warranted to lower the braking force?

I've never designed for braking force on a pedestrian bridge. I doubt that the vehicle would be travelling fast enough and braking hard enough to create the load. Longitudinal wind and TU would likely control over any small braking force.

I too have never considered braking load on a pedestrian bridge for the same reasons given by jorton.
